Greek PM says Athens to coop. with Iran beyond EU limits

TEHRAN, Feb. 08 (MNA) – Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras told President Rouhani on Mon. Athens intends to expand relations with Tehran beyond the normal regulations set for an EU country.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani held talks with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Tehran on Monday, and discussed ways to expand cooperation on various fields with the European country.

“We do not look upon Greece as merely a member of the European Union, rather we regard each other as two countries that in the course of history have contributed a lot to the knowledge of humanity and scientific developments in the world,” said the president.

Referring to extensive grounds for cooperation between the two countries, Rouhani said “bilateral ties are at a level where we can expand cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, particularly in economic, cultural and academic fields.”

Rouhani then touched upon the issue of terrorism in the world, calling for further cooperation between Iran and the EU in the fight against terrorism; “regrettably so, despite all the existing resources, certain Western countries have yet to show a serious intent for combating terrorism, and some others back terrorists to advance their own short-term interests.”

The Greek prime minister, for his part, stressed his country’s resolve in expanding relations with Iran in all areas, saying “although Greece is a member of the European Union, it will develop cooperation with Iran beyond this framework.”

“It is imperative to establish economic cooperation on solid and stable foundations that would benefit both countries; for this reason, Greek companies backed by major European banks are keen on investing in Iran in all areas, particularly in shipping, construction and services.”

Tsipras also expressed his country’s readiness to establish direct flights between Tehran and Athens for developing tourism ties.
